The Symbolism of Joy in Chagall’s ‘Bateau Mouche’

Marc Chagall’s 39 x 30 cm color lithograph Bateau-Mouche with Bouquet was made in 1963. As far as I know, this expression is also used for the classic Seine River Cruise in Paris. The fantastic world and the surreal colors of the painter do not leave us here alone; the color scheme and the well-deserved reputation of Chagall’s unmistakable style combine to create a unique ambience.
Considering that many of Chagall’s themes are also present in this painting, it is possible to say that this is a Chagall classic. The blues, the Paris skyline, the flowers, and other elements transport the viewer into a vivid fantasy world that almost recreates the dreamy romance of Paris. The vivid hues of the flowers support the painting’s central idea of joy and love, while the famous images of Paris support the work’s cultural meaning. The painting allows the viewer to get a taste of Parisian life while at the same time getting lost in Chagall’s fantastic world.
Chagall’s painting may also reflect the joy of the artist’s return to Paris after the occupation, a kind of “reunion.” Yes, these must be happy moments, because artists have always been inspired by the new opportunities, possibilities, and chances that life offers. The soul of every artist is fueled by important spiritual fuels such as a safe and supportive work environment, friendship, camaraderie, and, of course, love. It is these spiritual fuels that allow artistic creation to flourish.
In this context, the ship or boat that appears in the painting may represent not only a cruise but also Noah’s Ark coming ashore after a violent storm. In this way, the image also signifies the end of troubles and a new beginning. We are accustomed to the theology in Chagall’s works; the artist’s use of his paintings to reveal important concerns about human existence has become his signature. For this reason, we have no problem finding Chagall’s theology in this work. Like the large flower next to it, the image of a sun in the distance represents the artist’s emotional space, where he looks to the future with optimism. Just like the dove in the story of Noah’s Ark, returning with an olive branch in its beak, bringing the good news of life and vitality to those on the ark! The choice of soft tones throughout the work helps us to feel the warmth of love and friendship, as well as the optimism of life symbolized by the sun.
So let’s say we long for a world illuminated by the warmth of peace, hope, and love.
